Wearing a crisp tuxedo, Tom Ford sunglasses and sporting an overgrown beard, the oxymorons could go and on when describing Joaquin Phoenix's appearance on David Letterman's late night American talk show in February of last year. I was in New York at the time and watched what was to be the most uncomfortable interview I have ever seen. The talented actor was there to promote his new film, Two Lovers, but if anything was promoted it was the actor's awkward silences and state of mind when responding to Letterman's questions with one word answers and announcing he was giving up acting for a career as a rapper with the help of Sean "Diddy" Combs. Ending the interview with applause few and far between, it was unclear whether this was a major faux pas by Phoenix's agents or a very well rehearsed publicity stunt. But in May of this year, I'm Still Here: The Lost Years of Joaquin Phoenix was screened to potential buyers in LA. Directed by Casey Affleck, the film documents the actor's highs and lows and received very mixed - and disturbing - reviews by preview critics who are still unclear whether this is serious or a mockumentary. Below is the trailer for the film which is due to be released on September 10th of next month - we can all then decide for ourselves whether this will be the very public rise or fall of Mr. Phoenix...
Hej alle! (that's 'hi everyone' in Danish) I'm back from having had an awesome time in Copenhagen so once I unpack and fix my camera which suffered a meltdown a few days ago, I'll be blogging about art, design and smørrebrøds over the next few days.
But until then, at the beginning of this week, my very good friends Sara and Nadia from Young & Lost Club launched their Compilation album to coincide with the label's fifth anniversary of finding the freshest indie bands on the London scene. I don't know where all this time has gone but Sara and Nadia have grown from strength to strength and I'm very proud of their amazing success with this landmark celebration. If you haven't heard of Y&LC then I suggest you just pretend that you have and do your homework pronto - see the girls in NME and American Songwriterof this month as well as at their club night and dj sets across the capital. With a limited release of 1500 copies, The Young & Lost Club Compilation features thirty-five tracks from bands such as Vincent Vincent and the Villains to Good Shoes and Noah and the Whale so get your copy now and celebrate five years of a label that has done so much for so many bands...
From college dropout to a PR's nightmare client, think what you like about Kanye West - he's bringing excess back from recess. Having taken a break from music to work on various projects from fashion to his very own art and culture website, October of this year will see the release of his yet to be titled new album. If a preview of the track "Power" is anything to go by, it will be more than the beats critics will be raving about. A video painting, directed by artist and filmmaker, Marco Brambilla, has been released for the track that is said to have been inspired by Michelangelo's frescos in the Sistine Chapel depicting, "an empire on the brink of collapse from its own excess, decadence and corruption". I smell renaissance in the air...
